Sacred war

War with tobacco is run, perhaps, from the very moment of its appearance in Europe. However, activists against tobacco smoking were considered exalted fringes that don't have any chance for victory. For example, such as, Mary Walker that lived in New York more than 100 years ago. This hero of civil war, honored for battlefield bravery, has become famous not for her military merits at all but for individual crusade against smokers. As newspapers of that time informed this imposing lady was walking along the streets of her native town and when she saw smoking gentleman, she approached to him and with clean stroke with umbrella has punched from his mouth cigar or cigarette. She named this struggle with "malignant nicotine".

In 1997 war with tobacco began seriously but among smoking followers appeared first famous victim - main hero of advertising campaign of Camel cigarettes animated camel Joe Camel. USA authorities considered that use of animated characters in tobacco advertisement attracts children and teenagers to cigarettes. Joe Camel disappeared but USA anti-tobacco lobby has celebrated first victory (in April 1997).

Of course, tobacco Companies have protested at that time, have accused government and anti-tobacco movement of free speech violation and limitation of the right to choose for adult people that fully are conscious of their actions American people. However, public support wasn't on the side of Companies. They indeed have spent huge amounts on advertising, smoking indeed was (and remains) not most harmless habit and, the most important, anti-tobacco activists appeared sincere and disinterested fighters for peoples' health. That is why few people have marched against first, quite reasonable restrictions that firstly in USA and then in entire world authorities started to introduce concerning tobacco manufacturers.

They were obliged to make everything in order their advertising wouldn't reach children. They were prohibited to sell cigarettes and other tobacco products to minors, they were enforced to recognize that they from the very beginning knew and have hidden with all possible ways that tobacco causes dependence but its' smoking is harmful for health.

Finally, they were allocated with duty to compensate charges that state agencies of public health have borne, paying for treatment of heavy smokers from various serious diseases quasi they have something to do with smoking. Let's remind, that in 1998 according to agreement between tobacco Companies with Department of Justice, state authorities and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tobacco manufacturers have paid $ 365.5 billions. Besides, from means of tobacco Companies began to finance various anti-tobacco programs directed on children and teenagers.

Somebody considered these measures excessive, but generally all were ready to agree that insignificant inflections were compensated with goal's importance - guarding children and teenagers from tobacco. Smokers' rights for smoking and right of tobacco manufacturers for production and sale of their products weren't put in question by anyone.
