World Tobacco Day was declared in 1988 by World Health Organization and is celebrated annually on May 31st.
Since January 2010 in 29 American states came into force ban for smoking in restaurants, in 25 US states - ban for smoking in bars.

On February 3rd 2010 New York City Council has voted for project that enlarges zones of smoking ban in public places. Cigarette felt under ban in parks, to which was also added Time Square Zone and on the beaches. The law came into force on May 23rd 2011. Penalty for smoking in public places, beaches, parks and on Time Square makes 50 USD.

Ban on smoking in all public places, including cafes, bars and restaurants was introduced in megalopolis back in 2002.
USA congress hasn't approved federal law that regulates smoking that is why rules that are in force in different states may differ one from each other. For example, in Oklahoma smoking is prohibited in all closed premises that are not equipped with special ventilating units, except private clubs, tobacco shops, bars and halls for Bingo game. Moreover, Oklahoma is almost the only state in which local authorities are prohibited by law to introduce additional restrictions on tobacco smoking that are not foreseen by state legislation.
In Texas smoking is allowed everywhere providing that the owner of one or another location install special places for smoking (such place may be declared entire location).
In Alaska State the main requirement of the law is exact separation of zones for smokers and non-smokers. Moreover, if any major countries of the world, ban for smoking in classrooms is considered natural, in Alaska this restriction is active only during lessons. After the end of school day smoking is allowed in any school premises. But in the building of local Capitol smoking is prohibited only during parliament recess.

Nevertheless in major states are in force laws that prohibit smoking in all non-private closed premises. More or less spread norm is smoking ban near the buildings or public transport stops. In many states is in force ban for smoking in apartment or car in presence of minors. According to data of the Fund for the rights of non-smoking Americans, 71% of country citizens live in districts in which right for smoking is regulated anyway.
Ottawa is city for non-smokers. According to the decision of authorities from September 1st 2001 smoking was prohibited in all public places, hospitals, inside state agencies, in restaurants and also bars and private clubs. Allocation of special places for smoking is also excluded. Law enforcement officials will have to follow ban observance. First infringers were penalized on September 4th. First infringement is penalized approximately in amount of 250 Canadian dollars, next - up to 5000 Canadian dollars. This law was supported by public organizations, medics and labor unions.
